Mr. Buckley quit his day job in September after his online profits had greatly surpassed his salary as an administrative assistant for a music promotion company. Mr. Buckley is one of the original members of YouTube’s partner program, which now includes thousands of participants, from basement video makers to big media companies. “We wanted to turn these hobbies into businesses,” said Hunter Walk, a director of product management for the site, who called popular users like Mr. Buckley “unintentional media companies.” But a spokesman, Aaron Zamost, said “hundreds of YouTube partners are making thousands of dollars a month.” At least a few are making a full-time living: Mr. Buckley said he was earning over $100,000 from YouTube advertisements.

In a time of media industry layoffs, the revenue source — and the prospect of a one-person media company — may be especially appealing to users. As his traffic and revenues grew, Mr. Buckley had “so many opportunities online that I couldn’t work anymore.” He quit his job at Live Nation, the music promoter, to focus full-time on the Web show.

Mr. Williams, known as smpfilms on YouTube, has been dreaming up online videos since 2005, and he said his big break came in September 2007 with a music video parody called “The Mean Kitty Song.” The video, which introduces Mr. Williams’ evil feline companion, has been viewed more than 15 million times. Mr. Buckley, who did not even have high-speed Internet access two years ago, said his YouTube hobby had changed his financial life.

Jonathan Crossfield tests the promise of effortless internet millions. We’ve all seen the claims: websites, seminars or mailouts promising online riches and offering – for a fee – the answer.
This results in thousands of virtually identical websites shouting the same offer with the same copy and same design – each one slowly fading away as the dream of easy money evaporates under the reality of web hosting bills.

These are the online businesspeople who understand how the internet works and are willing to accept that any level of success requires effort. But something must separate the internet millionaires from the thousands of wasted websites, sorry stores and bust blogs.

Lagudi has spent the past few months building his online venture, The SOC Exchange.
Yet many new online businesspeople, excited by the promises of internet millions, buy too much advance stock under the assumption of immediate, massive sales.

Sam Shetty, sales manager for Netregistry, helps hundreds of small businesses launch online every year.
Online marketing techniques such as search engine optimisation (SEO) and search engine advertising can, over many months, gradually build up the flow of traffic necessary to turn a profit.

“I talk to customers every day who have invested heavily in a website and stock but don’t want to spend that little extra on the marketing,” Shetty says. For most sites to achieve traffic, they need to plan for at least six months of SEO, as well as other marketing and PR activities, before traffic flow converts into enough customers to make a profit.”

Rowse didn’t set out looking for internet riches. “Many hear about internet riches and start out with dollar signs in their eyes only to find a few months later that they had unrealistic expectations,” he says.

The keys to online riches
Lagudi believes that people should be less concerned with chasing online millions and more concerned about understanding what level of income meets their needs.
nett.com.au

Jargon translator

AdSense: Google’s popular advertising tool, which automatically places ads in a webpage based on keywords in the text

Affiliate marketing: A technique where website owners run links or advertisements on their sites and earn a commission on any sales generated when readers click through.

Blog: A regularly updated weblog. Originally online diaries, they have now become ongoing editorial forums.

Key word or phrase: The word or phrase used to trigger a search engine request.

Search engine: The online application that allows you to enter a word or phrase and returns a (long) list of the most relevant websites that contain your request. The most popular search engines include Google, MSN and Yahoo.

Search engine optimisation (SEO): The activity of adjusting webpages to increase the chances of appearing prominently in the most relevant search engine results for your product.

Traffic: The flow of visitors to your website.

Many webmasters, developers and computer gurus are now interested in different ways of investing in internet real estate. Normally, the value of a website depends upon traffic and income that the particular website generates. The main reason behind creating the website is to make it profitable with increased traffic so that it can be sold at higher price, later on. If you really want to make substantial income from selling websites, then you must ensure that your website is profitable.
Selling websites can be profitable business, if your website is earning steady income. Depending upon the decision you take, your website can normally be sold if it has been earning consistent income for the period of six to twelve months. If your website has been producing stable income for long time period and aged well, then you can receive higher profits by selling it. You should follow these basic principles if you really want to earn money selling websites.

Eleutian Technology hires people in towns across northern Wyoming to teach English to Koreans of all ages using Skype, the free online calling and person-to-person video service.
Holiday got the idea for the company after a short stint teaching English in Korea in the early 1990s. He went to work in Korea’s telecommunications industry and eventually became a top executive of Korea Telecom.

Eleutian isn’t the only company harnessing the Internet from the distant ranges of Wyoming.
Eleutian’s teachers include Kathleen Hampton, whose home is remote even by Wyoming standards.
For instance, one weekly one-on-one Internet course from Eleutian costs $150 for a whole semester, while English tutors in Korea charge from $40 to $60 an hour, Holiday said.
Holiday had been planning to start Eleutian Technology in Utah. He picked Ten Sleep, where his in-laws live, after seeing fiber-optic cable being installed throughout town.

Others teach from Eleutian’s learning centers in Ten Sleep and four other towns in northern Wyoming.
But he added: “With their technical capability, their telecom capability _ their fiber, their bandwidth _ there’s no reason why companies like Eleutian can’t grow in towns like Ten Sleep.”

Our Abbey was looking into various new income projects, which had ranged from growing Shitake mushrooms, raising Christmas trees, to building a golf course and conference center. An income project that was based on a necessary consumable item, like toner and ink cartridges, was exactly what the monastery needed - a solid, consistent, income that would not be affected by difficult economic times.

Why would anyone pay more money, when they can have quality products for less, from monks who use the income to help others?

MonkHelper Marketing, Inc. now handles the management of LaserMonks.com, from business development, technology and website management, all vendor relations, corporate accounts and bid processes, graphics and branding of the LaserMonks name, search engine and technology marketing, marketing and PR, and have built the entire customer service center from the ground up. This leaves the monks free to be monks, first and foremost, along with focusing on developing the business, media relations, advertising, speaking, and even more importantly, finding creative ways to use LaserMonks income to help others. It is claimed their sales is about $2.5 million!

It has been a rough year for Mr. Hazlett, founder and president of Integrate Consulting L.L.C., a software design firm in Hoboken, N.J. First, during the market turmoil last January, Johnson & Johnson, Merrill Lynch and almost all his other clients walked away from their contracts in just two weeks.

In jobs after college as a fund-raiser and later as a marketer for a couple of architectural firms, he said, “I got bitten by the bug to make software to make it easier to do things.” Once, he said, for example, he redesigned an operational system that allowed his employer to create photo portfolios for clients in five minutes instead of eight hours. But while all this was happening, Mr. Hazlett was also committing a classic blunder of the fledgling entrepreneur: putting his eggs in too few baskets.

Despite what network a mobile user might be on, the speeds at which pages appear on small screens are not yet comparable to broadband. For optimum results though, a second version of your site aimed specifically at mobile users will ensure your site appears ideally on smaller screens.

People are usually searching on a mobile device for something they want urgently, so save the prettiness for your regular website and maximise functionality on the mobile version.

Create a Mobile Domain Mirror Make the small investment into purchasing a .mobi domain name so that you can have an alternative version of your regular website specifically tailored to mobile users.

Downsize Downloads Mobile users are charged for the amount of data downloaded, so keep the sizes of your web pages small.

Minimise Borders The home page of your company’s main site may have borders and padding to make the content best fit the average screen, but for mobile users you’ll have to reduce all the margins for a small screen.
